Artists Biography

Paul Kelly

Paul Kelly was born in Dublin in 1968. He started painting and drawing at a very early age. Completely self-taught, Paul paints in a pre-impressionist style in oils and watercolours, painting mostly his local landscape of North Dublin with its fields, market gardens and small harbours, he is also equally at home with still lives and portraiture, where his keen sense of observation display instinctive good taste. Kelly’s paintings are easy on the eye, appearing almost effortless belying his solid craftsmanship. He has exhibited frequently at the RHA, in Dublin and in 1991 he received the “James Kennedy Memorial Award” for portraiture. Works by him are found in public and private collections worldwide including the “Fingal County Library” and the “Brian P Burns Collection USA” in 1991 he was included in “Who’s who in Ireland” and “A Buyers Guide to Irish Art”. 1999 he received the “Ireland fund of Great Britain – Artist of the Year Award”. Paul has had numerous sell-out exhibitions, and continues to live and work in North County Dublin.

“When I paint, what interests me in the work is its underlying abstraction. This is what generates its quality, its likfe and its innate truth. If the work can arouse sensations, thoughts, ideas and feelings, and stimulate the viewer then for me it is successful.”
