Artists Biography

Gemma Guihan

Gemma Guihan studied at the College of Marketing and Design, obtaining an advanced diploma in Visual communications Design in 1982. Initially concentrating on illustrative work, it was not long before Gemma decided to devote herself fulltime to painting and sculpure.

In 1991 her talent was recognised at the Royal Hibernian Academy when she won an award for ‘Artist of Promise’ at their annual exhibition.

Gemma paints predominantly in oils and her sculptural work is carried out in bronze and mixed media. The fall of natural light on landscapes, interiors, still-life objects, animal and human form, provides an infinite motif from which to paint.

Her sculptural work is figurative and deals with complex human relationships. The theme of ‘sisters’ has been explored through a series of works entitled ‘The World Within I Doubly Prize’, ‘Always Back Returning’ and ‘We Wove a Web in Childhood’. The tensions of male and female relationships has been conveyed through the works ‘The Essential Self’ and ‘Decline and Isolation, while some works simply wish to pay homage to the human form, she has also carried out private commissions for sculptural portraits.
